Willie Brown has been at the center of California politics, government, and civic life for an astonishing four decades. His career spans the American presidency from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush. Today, he heads the Willie L. Brown, Jr., institute on politics and public Service, where this acknowledged master of the art of politics shares his knowledge and skills with a new generation of California leaders.

Bill Boyarsky's long and distinguished career as a writer and journalist includes 31 years with the Los Angeles Times and prior to that, ten years with the Associate Press. As an award winning columnist and City Editor for the Times, he covered the inner workings of government and politics at the national, state and local levels and also served as a general assignment reporter. Among his numerous professional honors, he participated in team coverage for the paper that won three Pulitzer Prizes and is a recipient of the California First Amendment Coalition journalist award. He is the author of four books and was awarded the John Jacobs fellowship for political biography from UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies for his just-published biography of former California State Assembly Speaker and State Treasurer Jesse Unruh.
