Participant(s) Bio

Oliver Sacks is the author of nine previous books, including The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat. His work has been supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He lives in New York City, where he is a practicing neurologist.

Ara Guzelimian is the Provost and Dean of the Juilliard School, the distinguished performing arts conservatory, in New York City. Prior to the Juilliard appointment, he was Senior Director and Artistic Advisor of Carnegie Hall from 1998 to 2006. As a writer and music critic, he has contributed to many publications, including Musical America, Opera Quarterly, Opera News, Symphony, and the New York Times. He is editor of Parallels and Paradoxes: Explorations in Music and Society, a collection of dialogues between Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said.
